Whitetail Deer Hunting in Canada, Kansas and Wyoming

Important Considerations for a Successful Hunt in Canada...

1. Without a doubt safety is the most important factor and must be addressed first; Canadian laws require all firearms to be completely unloaded before riding in a vehicle. No shells are allowed in either chamber or magazine of a rifle. If the rifle has a clip, it must be removed. This Canadian law carries a fine up to $1500.00 and the loss of hunting privileges. Saskatchewan requires an all white, red, or orange suit with red or orange hat. Alberta has no color requirement.

2. Purchasing the right clothing and footwear will make the harsh weather in Canada and long hours on stand much easier. It is no secret that most other seasoned hunters and I consider Raven Wear the finest clothing available. Schnee's extreme boots is a great walking and warm boot for Canada. Next, I will compile a list of essentials for a great hunt.

3. Clothing list
• Raven Wear rifle anti-freeze system, invaluable for sitting long periods of time
• 3 sets of quality insulated underwear
• 2 pair of boots - 1 pair of sorel felt, 100 degree boots
• 1 pair of 1000 gram Thinsulated walking boots (I prefer Schnee's Extreme boots)
• wool socks
• complete facemask
• toboggan
• 2 pairs of gloves - 1 heavy pair and 1 lighter pair
• pair of wool or insulated fleece pants for walking or warm temperatures
• windproof vest
• 12-24 heat packs

4. Hunting list
• backpack
• binoculars 10x40 - 8 x 30 (an absolute must)
• rattling horns or rattling bag
• 2 grunt tubes
• 25 feet pulling rope
• thermos
• rifle rest or shooting sticks
• Bolt action rifle of 270 calibers and up (preferably 7mm to 300mag.)
• quality scope - with neoprene scope covers
• 40 - 50 rounds of ammunition

5. Attitude
Taking a trophy buck anywhere requires the patience and confidence in your guide, and his ability to put you in the correct location.

Nowhere is it more important for the hunter to sit quiet and motionless than in the peaceful lands of Canada. Unnatural rustling, coughing, or metallic sounds travel great distances on snow and frozen ground, alerting deer of your position. This is one reason rattling works so well, when combined with a favorable buck-doe ratio. Keep your attitude positive and have faith that is only takes thirty seconds to shoot the buck of your dreams.
